Zack Snyder On Why We Needed To See Them Die Again

I got over to see Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice a second time yesterday, but this time I took my girlfriend. She's not a comic reader overall, she's a The Walking Dead, Star Wars and Doctor Who fan. She also thinks Henry Cavill is hot and liked Man of Steel. So I figured she'd like the film, which she did well enough. She said it started off negative though because she was once again having to watch Bruce Wayne's parents get killed. She didn't think that was necessary. I believed it was to help emphasize that his mother's name was Martha.

Turns out the debate has been happening in more than just the cab of my truck. Director Zack Snyder talked about this very issue in an interview with Forbes magazine. How there was a question of whether or not retelling what happened to his parents was necessary. This is what Snyder had to say:

You know, they're both born and live in a world where someone can care about them and mourn them, and they can love their mother. And that's the cool thing, you know we spend so much time with the Martha-Clark relationship that I think it kind of pays off there. You realize, oh, we needed that as viewers, so we could get to a moment with Batman where that moment with Martha resonates. Because we've lived on with Clark's relationship with his mother, so that moment is like, "Wow, that's ringing for me and I feel it.

When we were shooting the title sequence, that whole idea about, "Do we really need to see the death of the Waynes again," is a big thing to take a shot at again. But you realize you need it, because it actually pays off. And I really wanted to do it all the way.

So I'm good with the need for it so they could emphasize the mother's name. But since I'm seeing people on-line theorize that the man in Wayne Tower who died in the begin, Jack, was Bruce's father who survived the mugging… perhaps Snyder should have emphasized that his dad's name was Thomas too.
