Ahsoka: Ashley Eckstein Encourages "Clone Wars" & "Rebels" Rewatches
Ahsoka voice actor Ashley Eckstein on how The Clone Wars, Rebels & Tales of the Jedi enhance watching the upcoming live-action series.
Given the 46-year history of Star Wars, there's bound to be some form of canon or reference that goes over the head of even the most ardent of fans, but that's what the Internet is for, right? Easter Egg hunting is a common practice as creatives are often fans loading their projects with as many of them as possible. It's probably not much of a surprise to fans who may need to play some catchup or a refresher when the live-action series Ahsoka premieres on Disney+ on August 23rd. While promoting her 2023 Her Universe Fashion Show to celebrate 100 years of Disney at San Diego Comic-Con on July 20th, original voice actress Ashley Eckstein has some suggestions for those who want to minimize gaps in the title character's backstory.
"Oh, absolutely! I actually recommend to everyone who is excited about the upcoming Ahsoka series, I highly recommend that you take the time to watch 'Clone Wars,' and watch 'Star Wars Rebels,' and even 'Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi,'" Eckstein told Cinemablend. "Because if you don't, you're going to miss out on crucial, crucial backstory that you really need to know to fully enjoy the Ahsoka series, which is so exciting." The actress voiced Ahsoka Tano since The Clone Wars as the apprentice to Jedi Anakin Skywalker, the future would-be Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Vader.
Eckstein would reprise the role for Rebels in a more supportive role and the Disney+ anthology series, which again expanded her story before she joined the Jedi Order in TCW and briefly touches on her life after Order 66. "We're gonna get so many new and incredible stories, but without that backstory and full understanding of who Ahsoka is and even who the other characters are, you're not going to have as rich or in-depth of an understanding and appreciation of what's going to happen in the series without the backstory, so I'm very grateful that 'Clone Wars' and 'Rebels' and 'Tales the Jedi' are on Disney+. Any chance I get, I tell fans, 'Go and watch it and binge it before you watch the Ahsoka series. It's really gonna matter.'"
Rosario Dawson stars in the live-action Ahsoka, which operates as a spinoff from The Mandalorian, in which she made her Star Wars franchise debut. Then again, you can make the equal case that it's season five of Rebels since we're seeing the bulk of the characters return from that era. Eckstein notes that catching up and rewatching isn't much different from what fans already do from the Skywalker Saga films. "And then 'Clone Wars' and 'Rebels' and even 'Tales the Jedi' in general… You know, at some point, most Star Wars fans go back and watch the movies. They watch Episodes IV, V, and VI, and I, II, and III. Well, now, 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars' and 'Star Wars Rebels,' they're a part of that timeline. It's part of the story. It's part of the overall trajectory and journey of these characters, so without watching those series, you're kind of missing out. They're all connected. I highly recommend that fans watch them."
