Ahsoka: Mary Elizabeth Winstead on Season 2 News, Prepping for Role

Mary Elizabeth Winstead on Season 2 news and why playing Hera Syndulla in Disney+'s Star Wars series Ahsoka was a unique opportunity.

Given the way Disney has had faith in Dave Filoni's vision of Star Wars since his first animated series, The Clone Wars, expanding his vision to the live-action world in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka and his promotion, it should come to no surprise the Rosario Dawson-starred series has been renewed for a second season. Someone who's looking forward to it is Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who plays Rebel general & Ghost pilot Hera Syndulla. In season one, she helped Ahsoka Tano while upsetting the New Republic bureaucrats in the process threatening to strip her of rank. The actress spoke about the news that she got a jump start in the Star Wars universe thanks to a visit to her husband Ewan McGregor's Disney+ series.

"It was great to have a direct line to what this experience was going to be like, and it was nothing but positive," Winstead told The Hollywood Reporter. "Of course, we had those conversations before [Ahsoka] as well, but it became a different conversation once it became a reality that I might actually be stepping into it. And I also had a familiarity with the project from being around on the 'Obi-Wan' set." Filming for Ahsoka came shortly after Winstead gave birth to her and McGregor's first child. "It was really perfect for me just in terms of where I was in my life at the time. It was my first job back after having a baby, and I was still feeling my way back into my body in terms of my physicality in the role," she said. "So it was perfect for me to feel strong and like a warrior, but in a way that didn't require me to wreck my body, which was still in some level of postpartum recovery even at that stage."

As far as news of the standalone The Mandalorian & Grogu film with the Ahsoka season two renewal, "I can say that I genuinely know very little, but that is a very exciting press release, and I'm really happy to hear that it's being talked about," Winstead said. Dawson made her live-action debut in The Mandalorian, so it's possible we could see Rebels characters in the new film. Ahsoka, which also stars Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Ray Stevenson, Ivanna Sakhno, Diana Lee Inosanto, David Tennant, Hayden Christensen, Lars Mikkelsen, and Eman Esfandi, is available to stream on Disney+.
