The Big Bang Theory Was Cancelled Because Jim Parsons Wanted to Move On

Yesterday CBS announced that The Big Bang Theory, one of the biggest sitcoms of the modern age, would be ending after its 12th season with the series finale airing in May 2019. There wasn't any specific reason cited, but the most agreed-upon reason was scheduling. The core cast was receiving more than $1 million per episode, and the numbers would have been too much for CBS considering the ratings have been going down.

It sounds like that isn't quite the case. According to Entertainment Weekly the real reason the show is ending is because Jim Parsons, who plays Dr. Sheldon Cooper and is probably the breakout star of the shows, decided that he was ready to leave. Since there isn't a show without Sheldon (he's popular enough to merit his own spinoff), it's not surprising that they decided to end the show instead of trying to go on without him. EW reached out for comment from Parsons but hasn't received one yet.

Thus far most of the cast has been pretty mum about the cancellation, but a few members have spoken up. Mayim Bialik, who joined the cast in season 4, posted on her official website.

Am I happy? Of course not. This has been my job since Melissa Rauch and I joined the cast as regulars in season 4. I love my job. I love my castmates, and I feel such appreciation for our incredible crew, our brave writers, our entire staff, and our amazing fans. So many people are a part of our Big Bang family. This is hard. I love coming to work and pretending to be Amy. She's a riot. She's me, and I am her. And soon she will not be mine to create.

Bialik went on to say how grateful she is about the opportunity to be on the show and mentioned how hard it's going to be to film this final season without crying.

Being an actor is profoundly humbling, incredibly gratifying, and terribly complex. Being an employed actor on what is the #1 comedy in America is unbelievable. And the fact that so many people consider us a part of their lives and families is powerful. I don't take any of it for granted.

Kaley Cuoco has also shared a post on Instagram saying "no matter when it was going to end, my heart would have always been broken in two."

The Big Bang Theory returns for its final season on September 24th before moving to its Thursday time slot on September 27th.
