The CW Releases Their Mid-Season 'Dare to Defy' Trailer
The CW has released their new 'Dare to Defy' ad for the midseason, and it's interesting to see who is and who isn't in it. added to the mix are characters/actors from Black Lightning and Life Sentence along with returning series iZombie, The Originals and The 100. All four series have kicked off since the first of the year — it makes sense that they wouldn't be part of the previous trailer that included Valor, which has ended its run and is pretty much canceled. The somewhat surprising addition to the mix is Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, whose season has already come to an end.
The trailer includes quick shots of Rose McIver for iZombie, Chad Michael Davis and Daniel Giles for The Originals and Marie Avgeropoulos for the 100 while we get a shot of Cress Williams, China Ann McClain, and Nafessa Williams for Black Lightning and then Cress in costume later in the trailer. Stephen Amell, Katie Cassidy, and Juliana Harkavy all appear for Arrow and Nick Zano, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Caity Lotz, and Brandon Routh all appear for DC's Legends of Tomorrow. Yet only Melissa Benoist and Grant Gustin appear for Supergirl and The Flash respectively. With The Flash being the network's top-rated show, you'd think a few more faces like Carlos Valdes, Candice Patton, or Jesse L. Martin would've popped up.
The whole concept of the trailer is interesting to me in that it tries to appeal to so many different demographics. The first four faces you see are Gina Rodriguez, Amell, Lucy Hale, and Camila Mendes. The people watching Jane the Virgin and Life Sentence may turn in for Riverdale, but Arrow seems like a stretch. It would make more sense if they did a heroic trailer, a more fantasy trailer and then a romance/drama trailer. Unless the whole marketing campaign is "Look at all these beautiful people" — which is kind of the trademark of The CW.
