"Homecoming" Season 2: Stephan James, Hong Chau Returning; Kyle Patrick Alvarez Directing
Almost a month-to-the-day after Amazon's psychological thriller Homecoming announced singer, songwriter, and actress Janelle Monáe (Harriet, Hidden Figures) was set to lead the drama's upcoming second season, fans are learning who will be joining her – on both sides of the camera. Kyle Patrick Alvarez (13 Reasons Why, The Stanford Prison Experiment) has been tapped to direct and executive produce the second season, with Stephan James' Walter Cruz and Hong Chau's Audrey Temple set to return. Bobby Cannavale and Shea Whigham are also rumored to making returns.
"We're so lucky to have Kyle Alvarez on board to direct Season Two — his enthusiasm and relentless creativity are already taking the show in exciting new directions. And we're thrilled that Stephan and Hong will be returning — we can't wait to watch as they take their characters on these surprising journeys, far beyond anything we could have expected."
– Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg
Created by Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg, the second season finds Alvarez taking the "director's baton" from Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot) and Monáe replacing first season star Julia Roberts – who is not returning but is remaining as an executive producer on the Amazon Studios/UCP co-production. Fans of the popular Gimlet Media podcast will find the series moving beyond the soure material, including the introduction of new characters.
Homecoming's first season focused on Heidi Bergman (Roberts), a caseworker at the Homecoming Transitional Support Center, a Geist Group facility helping soldiers transition back to civilian life. Walter Cruz (James) is one of these soldiers, eager to begin the next phase of his life. Overseeing Heidi and the facility is Colin Belfast (Cannavale), an ambitious company man whose manic demands point to questionable motives.
Four years later, Heidi has started a new life when a Department of Defense auditor (Whigham) comes to her with questions about why she left the Homecoming facility. Heidi begins to realize that there's a whole other story behind the story she's been telling herself.
