IATSE Tentative Basic Agreement Summary Posted: AI Use Details & More
IATSE received the Tentative 2024-2027 Basic Agreement Summary that includes details on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and more.
Last week, the news hit that the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) had now reached both a tentative Hollywood Basic Agreement & Videotape Agreement and an Area Standards Agreement with the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers). Now, members are getting a look at further details of the tentative agreement with the release of the "Tentative 2024-2027 Basic Agreement Summary" – including the parameters in place regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Some of the key points addressed include how a union member will be compensated for using their own AI system via a "kit rental fee" (similar to how a sound professional is compensated for using their personal system during a production).
In addition, the tentative agreement addresses developing training for the use of AI, a producer being able to "reject the use of AI Systems in an employee's work," establishing "a separately signed statement or writing" for an employee to use to offer consent to be scanned, prohibiting AI scanning consent as a condition for employment, and ensuring that employers "will indemnify employees from liability" for using AI (except in instances of "gross negligence or willful misconduct"). Here's a look at the seven-page "Tentative 2024-2027 Basic Agreement Summary" that was released over the weekend – with Page 5 offering a rundown of AI policies/practices in the new three-year deal:
Early last week, IATSE reached a tentative agreement on a Hollywood Basic Agreement and Videotape Agreement with AMPTP – covering approximately 50,000 members of the mostly L.A.-based 13 West Coast Locals. On Tuesday night, a tentative agreement between IATSE and AMPTP on a new Area Standards Agreement was reached – comprising 23 Locals across the country (approximately 20,000 members). With a summary now made available to members, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) is set to be released at a later date. Members can also expect local town hall meetings to go over the details of the tentative agreements, with a multi-local webinar set for Sunday, July 14th, at 4 p.m. ET to review the proposed language for the MOA.
