'Marvel's The Defenders' Launches Several Viral Websites Along With A Teaser And Release Date
Well, within twenty-four hours Marvel has proven my date prediction for Marvel's The Defenders release date wrong. Today, several viral websites appeared that include a ton of fun Easter eggs for fans of the Netflix series.
First there was a sixteen second teaser that first appeared on Screenrant but is now up on twitter. The video is simply titled "Midland Circle Security Elevator B" and shows the four heroes standing in mock security footage looking a little worse for wear.
Jessica jumps up and kills the feed at 08:18:20:17 which gives us our release date: The Defenders will steam to Netflix on August 18, 2017. This isn't the first time we've seen "Midland Circle Financial" before as they were the ones helping The Hand build the giant (plot) holes in Daredevil season two. We can hear our villain Alexandra is the voice we hear that says "going down" which is about as subtle as you can get with the Marvel Universe. There is also a URL (http://23.253.120.81) which takes us to an archive of the New York Bulletin.
The New York Bulletin Archive site doesn't have that much actual content on it but there are a few interesting things on there. There is an interview with Ward and Joy Meachum about being the two young CEO's of Rand Enterprises and if the position is "cursed."
There are also several mock covers for the magazine including one about Trish (Patsy) Walker and her mother taking on a permanent house guest (the adoption of Jessica) with the headline "three's company", a photo of Daredevil asking "where is the Devil of Hell's Kitchen" implying that Matt isn't as active as he once was and a lower third that saying "house fire burns Castle" talking about when Frank Castle destroyed his home as the end of Daredevil season two, the third shows Luke Cage in prison orange with the headline "Luke Cage'd" (A+ pun I hope Karen wrote that) as he was taken back to prison at the end of Luke Cage season one, a four with Danny Rand at the press conference where he announced he was back flaked by Joy and Ward with the headline "Rand Rises", and finally a photo of a construction site of Midland Circle and the headline "earthshaking groundbreaking" and a lower third that says "crackpot scientist seeks lost city".
There is a section on the right that says "heroes of New York" that promises to "spotlighting everyday New Yorkers" with Claire Temple pictured. The bottom of the site also confirms the August 18th release date. There is a banner ad for the Chikara Dojo and clicking it takes us to our second viral site.
The Wing Way is the URL and the site begins with a somewhat cringy video of Colleen Wing demonstrating the skills you can learn from her.
There is a testimonial section where we see our second mention of Claire Temple pop up that says "I'm glad I found this dojo." That must have been written before the events of Iron Fist. There is another banner ad this time for Rand Enterprises that takes us to our third viral site of the day.
Ward Meachum has a linkedin profile and there are a few things worth poking around at. It gives us a bit of history about Ward before he had to take over Rand Enterprises and what could have happened if Harold hadn't died.
The Defenders will stream to Netflix on August 18, 2017.
