Shameless's Perry Mattfeld Joins CW Pilot 'In the Dark'
The CW has found its lead for their pilot In the Dark. Perry Mattfeld (Shameless) has been cast in the new project being written by Corinne Kingsbury and directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick). It comes from CBS TV Studios and Ben Stiller's Red Hour Films.
The story focuses on Murphy (Mattfeld), a flawed and irreverent woman who happens to be blind and is the only witness to the murder of her drug-dealing friend, Tyson. When the police dismiss her story, she sets out with her dog, Pretzel, to find the killer herself… while also maintaining her interesting dating life and her job at Breaking Blind, the guide-dog school owned by her overprotective parents.
Murphy is described as a disaffected, hard-drinking, promiscuous mess who pushes away anyone who cares for her, even her roommate and best friend, Jess (Brooke Markham). Jess is a well-meaning, nurturing veterinarian who is also overprotective of Murphy.
Also in the cast is Keston John who plays Darnell, a local drug dealer and cousin of Tyson. He also dismisses Murphy's claims that she found Tyson's body in an alley before it mysteriously disappears. He thinks she's a "sloppy, blind white girl" who is imagining things, but as she continues her investigation he realizes that Tyson might really be dead. He doesn't trust the cops, so he joins Murphy in her quest for justice. His admiration and attraction to Murphy grows as the case moves forward.
Markham was previously seen in Dierdre & Laney Rob a Train while John is in One Day She'll Darken.
With last months announcement that the CW was expanding their hours of original programming from 10 to 12, the odds for new pilots to get picked up improved a bit too.
