SNL: Kenan Thompson Reflects on Full Circle Moment with Jack Black

Saturday Night Live star Kenan Thompson reflects on how far he's come as an SNL cast member, bookended by Jack Black's hosting appearances.

It's hard to believe that Kenan Thompson has been a player on NBC's Saturday Night Live for nearly a quarter century, which is a record that probably won't be broken any time soon. With the April 4th, 2026 episode in the books, the actor, who's in his 23rd season, marked the occasion on social media while tagging the host, who was there from his first episode, back for his fifth time in Jack Black. "My very first episode of #SNL was in 2003 with host, [Jack Black]!! Fast forward to this past weekend… reunited 23 years later!!🤯❤️👏🏾"

SNL: Kenan Thompson Reflects on 23 Years with Host Jack Black

In the SNL clip from 2003, Thompson and Finesse Mitchell, starting as featured players, are talking before Black introduced himself, asking, "Oh my God! Are you the new dudes?! What's your name?" before putting his arms out between them dismissively, "Like I care!" Power walking his way through, turning the corner, squeezing Tina Fey's water bottle into her face, slapping Jimmy Fallon's script from his hands, and pushing Will Ferrell's face away. The clip then shifts to 2026 as the two bust out into Kansas's 1976 hit Carry On My Wayward Son a Capella, joined by James Austin Johnson, Andrew Dismukes, and Tommy Brennan with streamers at the "Husbands" sketch.

Thompson's stint is even more impressive considering he beats out the next performer in Darrell Hammond (14) by nine seasons, which doesn't count his current gig as the series' announcer. In the top 10, three cast members are active: Colin Jost at 13 seasons, Michael Che at 11, and Mikey Day, tied with Aidy Bryant and Tim Meadows, at 10 seasons. Thompson has not indicated any interest in leaving anytime soon and has remained busy collaborating with his Kenan and Kel co-star, Kel Mitchell, on Good Burger 2 (2023) and following up with the upcoming Kenan & Kel Meet Frankenstein, and separate projects Unwanted, and Pierre the Pigeon-Hawk.
