Denver Broncos Put Trevor Siemian on IR, Will Wait to See Who Will Start
At this point in the season, the best thing you can say about the Denver Broncos quarterback situation is that there are only two games left in the season. Just two years removed from a Super Bowl victory, the Broncos started off the promising year with a 3-1 record through the first quarter, a fearsome defense and Trevor Siemian under center. And then things took a turn. The team would lose their next eight games, benching Siemian and shuffling through Brock Osweiler and Paxton Lynch before coming back around to Siemian last week, who came in off the bench to lead the team to their fourth win of the year.
With Siemian starting again this week on the injury-prone Thursday night, he didn't last long. Indianapolis Colts linebacker Barkevious Mingo sacked Siemian, forcing the quarterback to land awkwardly on his shoulder. He got back up holding his left arm against his body, and the medical staff checked him out, then took him to the locker room. Today Siemian has been put on injured reserve for the last two games of the Broncos' season.
Osweiler stepped in and took the team from 10 points down to winning by 12 and upping their record to 5-9. He finished the game 12-of-17 for 194 yards, with two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown.
Denver head coach Van Joseph spoke to the media about the quarterback situation, saying that the coaches will meet on Monday to decide who will start on New Years Eve against the Washington Redskins. It would seem like Osweiler would be the logical choice having just played well, but the team is trying to figure out if Lynch is the quarterback of the future and may want to play him.
For the season Siemian is 206-349 for 2,285 yards with 12 touchdown and 14 interceptions and a quarterback rating of 73.3. Osweiler is 74-134 for 895 yards, five touchdowns to four interceptions and a QBR of 75.9. And Lynch is 9-14 for 41 yards with 0 touchdowns, 1 interception and a QBR of 38.4. Lynch started the game against Oakland in November and was hurt, he is expected to be cleared to play by December 24th.
One of the great football adages is, "If you have two quarterbacks, you actually have none." The Denver Broncos have three and that likely explains their poor season.
