Jay Cutler Signs One-Year Deal With The Miami Dolphins

Jay Cutler's retirement and broadcasting career has been put on hold. ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that the former Chicago Bear quarterback has agreed to a one year deal with the Miami Dolphins. Cutler had signed to be an analyst with FOX Sports but had a clause in his contract that would let him out if a team wanted to sign him as a starter. The Dolphins suddenly needed a starter after their franchise guy, Ryan Tannehill, re-injured his knee on a non-contact play during training camp. The report says that the contract is for $10 million with another $3 million in incentives.

Reports on Saturday said that Cutler was reluctant to take the deal, but his former coach and head man in Miami, Adam Gase, did a lot to convince him along with the team upping their offer. They increased their pursuit of Cutler when it became more likely that Tannehill will need surgery to repair the stretched ligament in his left knee.

Cutler had one of his best statistical years with the Bears in 2015 when Gase was the offensive coordinator. The quarterback threw for 3,659 yards with 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, completing 64.4 percent of his passes.

The team's other option would've been to go with 10-year veteran Matt Moore who has 24 starts and went 2-1 last year after Tannehill got hurt. A move of some kind was expected when on Friday Gase was asked about the situation and said: "Right now Matt is our quarterback." Not the strongest of endorsements.
