The Acolyte Episode 4 Review: "Day" Men, Fighters of the Night Man
We're closer to learning the truth about the forces fueling Mae's agenda against the Jedi in the latest episode of Disney+'s The Acolyte.
Action returns to the present in the latest episode of The Acolyte, which sees Amandla Stenberg's characters Mae and Osha at another crossroad as Mae is targeting her next Jedi in the Wookie, Kelnacca (Joonas Suotamo), who's living in isolation inside a forest on the planet Khofar. Joining Mae is her associate, Qimir (Manny Jacinto), who helped supply her poison for the previous target. Hot on her trail is the Jedi led by Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae), riddled with guilt and resolve over how Mae survived her fall while taking in Osha after their village burned down, as discovered in the previous episode "Destiny." The following contains minor spoilers for the episode "Day."
The Acolyte: Plot Thickens Some More
Vernestra (Rebecca Henderson) trusts Sol to lead the mission and take Osha despite her doubts about how close he is to this. He's with more reinforcements this time. Osha is also hesitant about confronting her twin sister after what happened last time, freezing when she could have stopped her. "Day" is light on action and more about expanding exposition between both parties to the climax as Team Jedi is trying to figure out how Mae can become an assassin without conventional means in a search over who trained her and stewing possible conspiracies.
Directed by Alex Garcia Lopez and written by Claire Kiechel and Kor Adana, Stenberg does more to flesh out the twin characters in this episode, and we also get more input from Dafne Keen's Jecki Lon and Charlie Barnett's Yord Fandar, who's gained quite a following online among fans as meme fodder. The episode is predictable with its twists and turns, but the execution is effective, with its climactic ending as the biggest piece of the puzzle dropping by the episode's conclusion. The bulk of the episode is guided again by Stenberg and Jung-jae's performances, with their efforts moving the story along. It's a shame we didn't see Suotamo doing more in this episode. In the meantime, Disney has another cute furry character to exploit now with merch in the new Tynnan tracker Bazil. All in all, this week's chapter built nicely on the ones that came before it – but the series still continues to leave some prime opportunities on the table. The Acolyte streams on Tuesdays on Disney+.
