The Alienist: Angel of Darkness Preview: A Turn of the Century Horror

Our patience is about to pay off, with Sara Howard (Dakota Fanning), Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Brühl), and John Moore (Luke Evans) reunited and looking to put an end to another nightmare when TNT's The Alienist: Angel of Darkness premieres this Sunday, July 19 at 9 pm ET/PT. Over the past few weeks, we've screened a number of trailers, teasers, and promos that alternated between the personal and investigative professional, between a mystery-suspense vibe and an almost supernatural-horror one. In the following teaser, we get a look at the series that does an effective job of giving us a sense of all the series' aspects at play, all at once. Dr. Kreizler, Sara, and John find themselves facing challenges on both sides of the law, each with a vested interest in the truth never seeing the light of day- even as a killer stalks the streets.

Frank Pugliese (House of Cards) serves as showrunner on the limited series adaptation of Caleb Carr's second novel in the "Alienist" series, set to play out over the course of four weeks, with two episodes per week making each chapter feel like its own mini-movie. Here's your newest look at The Alienist: Angel of Darkness:

An unflinching, gripping, turn-of-the-century murder mystery that traverses both New York's wealthy elite and the struggling underbelly of the city's "Gilded Age," The Alienist followed Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Brühl), a brilliant and obsessive "alienist" in the controversial new field of treating mental pathologies. In the first season, Dr. Kreizler was relentless in his pursuit of a never-before-seen ritualistic killer murdering young boys. He was joined by newspaper illustrator John Moore (Luke Evans) and Sara Howard (Dakota Fanning), an ambitious secretary determined to become the city's first female police detective.

In The Alienist: Angel of Darkness, Sara has opened her own private detective agency and is leading the charge on a brand-new case. She reunites with Dr. Kreizler, the formidable alienist, and John Moore, now a New York Times reporter, to find Ana Linares, the kidnapped infant daughter of the Spanish Consular. Their investigation leads them down a sinister path of murder and deceit, heading towards a dangerous and elusive killer. As in The Alienist, the series shines a light on the provocative issues of the era – the corruption of institutions, income inequality, yellow press sensationalism, and the role of women in society – themes that still resonate today.

Returning this season with Brühl, Evans, and Fanning are Douglas Smith (Big Little Lies) and Matthew Shear (Mistress America) as twin brothers Marcus and Lucius Isaacson; Robert Ray Wisdom (The Wire) as Cyrus; and Ted Levine (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) as former NYPD Police Commissioner Thomas Byrnes. Melanie Field (Heathers) and Rosy McEwen (The Letter Writer) join the cast this season. The Alienist: Angel of Darkness is produced by Paramount Television Studios, with Anonymous Content's Rosalie Swedlin, showrunner Stuart Carolan, director David Caffrey, writer Alyson Feltes, Pavlina Hatoupis, Ben Rosenblatt, Eric Roth, and Cary Joji Fukunaga serving as executive producers.
