The Boys: Simon Pegg Caps 18-Year Journey from Comics to TV Series

Simon Pegg shared a video reflecting on his The Boys journey, from Garth Ennis & Darick Robertson's comics to Eric Kripke's streaming series.

Simon Pegg has been a fan of the Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson comic The Boys, and it was a dream come true when series creator Eric Kripke gave him a call to play Hugh Campbell Sr on the Prime Video series. The season four, June 27th episode, "Beware the Jabberwock, My Son," provided a gut-wrenching moment in the Campbell family between Hugh Sr, his ex-wife Daphne (Rosemarie DeWitt), and their son Hugh "Hughie" Campbell Jr (Jack Quaid). The Shaun of the Dead star took to Instagram to chronicle his journey, breaking down how the comic design of Hughie on him along with pictures of him in the 2004 Edgar Wright film, comic panels of Hughie, photos with Kripke and Quaid, and set photos of the episode. The following contains major spoilers.

Episode five saw Hugh in the hospital following a stroke. As doctors inform his son that nothing more can be done for his father, Hughie finds himself desperate and calls a favor from A-Train (Jessie T. Usher) to steal a vial of Compound V from Homelander (Antony Starr). After the deed, Hughie gets second thoughts, but not before Daphne decides to take matters into her own hands, thinking that's what her son wanted. Hugh regains consciousness, but his memory issues remain, and he has powers he can't control. His son makes the difficult decision to euthanize him.

Pegg wrote the following to go with the montage, "In 2006, I found myself in the pages of a new comic book, called 'The Boys,' a game-changing takedown of the superhero genre by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. Darick based his design for the character of Wee Hughie on me. In 2018, Eric Kripke, the mastermind behind the hugely popular 'Supernatural,' adapted the comic for TV. The brilliant Jack Quaid was cast as Hughie and Eric invited me to guest as Hughie's father. This story has been in my life for 18 years, and I'm so proud to be a part of it."

"Love you, man! So happy I got to know you and work with you. They say never meet your heroes, but holy shit, I'm so glad I did. You're the best, dude," Quaid replied. "Love you, my friend. It was a literal dream come true that you agreed to play Hugh Sr. You've been OG Boys from the start. It's an honor working with you. And you fucking crushed it. Thank you," Kripke added. The Boys streams on Thursdays on Prime Video.
