Thrawn In Action, Mandalorian Madness, And Familiar Faces In The Second Half Of Star Wars Rebels Season 3

Lucasfilm dropped the trailer for the second half of Star Wars Rebels Season 3 this morning, and wow! This second half looks to be full of epic moments and a grand scale the series has been building towards since the series premiere. We started on lonely little Lothal, and over these last three seasons have created a vast story that crosses the galaxy and has firmly entrenched itself in Star Wars lore.

Some highlights:

The trailer opens with Ezra finding Kanan's Jedi holocron playing the message from Obi-Wan Kenobi from the first episode. As we now know from the winter finale, when Maul and Ezra merged the Jedi and Sith holocrons together seeking knowledge, they both saw Kenobi on Tatooine. I wonder if that will come into play…

Well, those certainly looks like Death Troopers to me. The squad makes an appearance here after first appearing on the big screen this past December in Rogue One. Here, they seem to be flanking Grand Admiral Thrawn. I love their design, and since they all died in the film on the Scarif beach, it's cool to see them appear here.

But they are far from the only characters from that film to show up, as both Mon Mothma and Saw Gerrera will make their presence known on the show as well. We don't have to wait very long for Saw, as he will be appearing on this Saturday's mid-season premiere. From the trailer, it is very cool to see him fighting alongside Captain Rex again, and having Forrest Whitaker provide the voice is wonderful. And what a great surprise to see Mon Mothma here! Teasing us with Hera being paged over the intercom in Rogue One and seeing Chopper on the base on Yavin, I kind of figured we would be getting some ties to this group of episodes, but Mon Mothma standing in the Ghost with our band of Rebels was a fist pump moment.

Thrawn also has it in for Agent Kallus, who was revealed earlier this season to be the new Fulcrum. There is going to be some great scenes playing out between these two, as they both are pretty aware of what the other has been doing, and their inevitable showdown should be one of the more anticipated of this group of episodes. Hopefully it turns out ok for Kallus, as they have done great character work with him, not to mention the fantastic voice work of David Oyelowo.

Speaking of Thrawn, it looks like he is going to be unleashed a bit more in the second half of the season, which makes perfect sense given what we have been shown so far. He has moved the pieces where he wants them on the board, now he seems to be moving to his endgame. We get many shots here of him in action, firing blasters, beating people up in some sort of training room. This is what I am sure people have been looking forward to since it was announced he was joining the show last summer.

The other main parts of the trailer concern Sabine Wren. It looks like we are finally going to get quite a bit of her history revealed to us, as she is now in possession of the Dark Saber, and is going to try and use it to bring Mandalore into the fold for the rebellion. We get some really awesome shots of her learning to use it with Kanan and it is mentioned that she will need to use it and her mother to unite Mandalore behind her. Mandalorian goodness incoming!

From there we get many shots of furious action, space battles, Zeb being Zeb, Chopper bugging people, and what looks like Chopper Base under heavy attack. The trailer is a little light on Hera moments, which I don't like as she is a key cog in not only the series, but the rebellion itself. I am sure she will get her moments to shine…

Wait…

What's happening…

AHH! LOOK AT HIM! LOOK AT HIS FINGERS!

Naturally if you have been watching the show, you knew this was coming. Still, to see these characters coming together for what will probably be the last time, and taking into account all that these two have been through with each other, this will be an epic showdown. As a Maul fan I hate seeing his charcter coming to an end, especially with all of the work they have done since resurrecting him in Clone Wars. But, I can think of no better finale than one last battle with Kenobi.
