"With A Netflix Biopic Underway": How To PR 101 The Tinder Swindler
The Tinder Swindler is a new Netflix presentation, looking at the alleged fraudulent crimes allegedly committed against women across the world by the alleged "Tinder Swindler" himself, Simon Leviev. Naturally, since the programme dropped on Netflix, there has been an increase in people looking up his history. This includes an article in Vents Magazine last November profiling Leviev in his role as a real estate adviser. And his opening piece of advice seems rather ironic, with Leviev suggesting, "Before you decide to enter this industry, ask yourself – why, where, and when. The degree of honesty you apply to find the answers will determine your ability to stay afloat when things go awry." Chaos is a part of life and every business, so it's essential "to be equipped with the mental strength when deals fall through, or payments get delayed or when promises and friendships turn sour."
Those payments certainly do get delayed. And it must be harder to be honest when you have so many identities with so many different names on credit cards. But nothing comes close to the way the magazine describes the "29-year-old Simon Leviev, a millionaire of repute" when it states that he has "a Netflix biopic underway". Which is certainly one way to put it. Like saying Bill Cosby performed in residence in Philadelphia for a number of years.
The Tinder Swindler is a British true-crime documentary film directed by Felicity Morris released on Netflix on the 2nd of February. Following the release of the film, Tinder permanently banned Leviev from its platform. Variety reported that Netflix is planning to make the documentary into a movie. Three victims have also set up a GoFundMe fundraiser campaign to help compensate their debts which have, at the time of writing, raised £84,000 against a £600,000 goal saying "So many people reached out to us asking if we had one, and it hadn't occurred to us to make one prior to this. However, we've spotted plenty of fakes, which makes us uneasy. We don't want more people getting defrauded. We realise there are a thousand other worthy causes to donate to and remain forever grateful if you choose to donate to this one. All we want are our lives back."
