Wrestling Legend King Kong Bundy Has Died
King Kong Bundy, who wrestled for WWE during its wildly popular 1980s era, died at the age of 61 yesterday. WWE confirmed the news in a post on their website.
Bundy never held a championship in WWE, though he did hold the AWA World Heavyweight Championship and the NWA Tag Team Championship, amongst various territorial titles in his career. Bundy wrestled for then-WWF from 1986-1988 and again from 1994-1996, wrestling Hulk Hogan in a steel cage for the main event of WrestleMania II. In fact, Bundy brutalizing Hogan after interfering in Hogan's Saturday Night's Main Event match with Don Muraco in the lead-up to that WrestleMania match, injuring Hogan's ribs by repeatedly avalanching him, is my own very first wrestling memory, forever etched into my mind. Bundy also made several memorable cameo appearances on the television show Married with Children.

No cause of death has been given for Bundy at press time, but it appears to have been sudden, as Bundy was advertising an upcoming appearance on Twitter as recently as yesterday, just hours before his death.

Making his debut in 1981, the New Jersey native retired from active wrestling in 2007, though he continued to make appearances at conventions and other events. Bundy was famous for his monstrous look and extraordinary athletic abilities for a man of his size, as well as for making referees count to 5 instead of 3 when he pinned his opponents. Bundy competed at 4 WrestleManias, including a match with The Undertaker at WrestleMania XI.
