Fox News Ask If The Kick-Ass Movie Is An Example Of Child Abuse
Well, the Daily Mail had their say last week, with the strange observation that a young girl dressed in young girl's clothes looks "as seductive as possible". Now the American equivalent, Fox News takes it to a new level, asking if the actress who plays Hit Girl has been exploited.
The station that only last month was asking if Marvel were full of traitors for an infamous "tea bagging" comment, has now looked at the role of Hit-Girl in the new movie Kick-Ass, and doesn't like what it sees,
"Seeing an attractive young girl playing such a violent role gives the message that this type of behavior (and language) is not outrageous. It makes it harder for parents to declare such behavior out-of-bounds when popular movies glorify it or make it humorous," said Joanne Cantor, Professor of Communication Arts at University of Wisconsin-Madison. "People may be able to understand that the movie is tongue-in-cheek, but that doesn't necessarily undo the desensitizing effect of the movie. Younger children may not be able to see it in theaters, but when it comes out on DVD, children of all ages will have access to it — and young children have less capacity to discount what they see."
The article expresses a great deal of concern over Chloe Moretz's use of the word "cunt" in the movie. But combined with all the violence, physical training and familiarising herself with weapons, Fox News asks "though Moretz had fun filming and the script is essentially light-hearted & humorous, has Hollywood gone too far with its ruthless vigilante child?" and if the role is "too adult for the young star"
Though the station does strain in its twists and turns to quote Dr. Susan Lipkins, Psychologist and CEO of Real Psychology who emphasises that the film could have a positive life-affirming message "It's about a regular person having control over their chaotic life in these chaotic times."
The big question is… what will Glenn Beck say?
