Joseph Lieberman To Found S.H.I.E.L.D.
And now we know definitively what it stands for. Securing Human Intelligence and Enforcing Lawful Dissemination.
Senator Joseph Lieberman (patch pictured) is among those who have introduced the S.H.I.E.L.D. legislation that would make it, basically, what WikiLeaks did a federal crime, publishing the name of a U.S. intelligence source.
Of course WikiLeaks is founded by an Australian living in London when he;s not in Switzerland. So, you know.
It's more likely to have an effect on, say, the New York Times, which did a deal with Julian Assange, along with other major worldwide newspapers, to disseminate the leaked ambassadorial communiques.
Lieberman stated;
"The recent dissemination by Wikileaks of thousands of State Department cables and other documents is just the latest example of how our national security interests, the interests of our allies, and the safety of government employees and countless other individuals are jeopardized by the illegal release of classified and sensitive information… This legislation will help hold people criminally accountable who endanger these sources of information that are vital to protecting our national security interests."
The act would amend an existing bill that forbids publishing classified information on U.S. cryptographic secrets or wiretapping to cover human intelligence. Leaking the information is already a crime, the act means to add publishing the information to the list.
Watch for a series of attachments to the bill, however, that cover care with wheels that flip up to fly, and a trillion dollar budget diversion for a helicarrier.
