Giant Sized Rum-Thing: Opening Up Warren Ellis And Mike Allred's The Spirit Of Bacardi Comic

One thing of note is at this size, having only three, four, five panels a page lets the story run at a clip but gives a real epic feel to the landscape of Cuba.

The comic is a little on the hagiographic side as you might expect from such a beast, and ends with the hero shot, as it were. And this championing of freedom and democracy with Emilio Bacardi handily concludes before any of the dodgier dealings between the Barcadis, the US and Castro's Cuba that might directly contradict the themes raised here. But it gives Warren the chance to write what he wrote in Transmetropolitan so well, one man taking all sorts of risk to pursue what he believes is right. Just he manages here without a bowel disruptor – unless you count drinking a whole bottle of rum. And it tells a historical narrative with which I was unfamiliar with skill, and damn if doesn't look pretty, Michael's big bold lines at this size, dividing the action the page as someone might the borders of a country…

Okay, time for a drink, I think. It's late. Or early, depending on your definition.

I would drink responsibly but where's the fun in that?
