'Crushes, Mixtapes, Strange Abilities, Dead Drug Dealers, Their Money & Life On The Run' – Preview 9 Pages Of We Can Never Go Home From Black Mask Studios
I had heard about the upcoming Black Mask Studios book, We Can Never Go Home, possibly further back than most people when it was still pre-pitch, I believe, talking with writer Matthew Rosenberg at a convention. I knew it was going to be an emotionally engaging book about young people, and an interesting book about possible worlds, but seeing it as a fully-fledged comic proved to me how under-prepared I was for what a beautiful book it was also going to be. This book is so distinctive that it's going to be a stand-out this Spring and let's hope retailers and readers take notice so this one doesn't slip under the radar.
Rosenberg, who previously wrote the acclaimed 12 Reasons To Die from Black Mask, and his own webcomic Menu, along with co-writer Patrick Kindlon, focuses on teenagers in this new work, an outcast and a "popular girl" with the added twist of some kind of super powers they don't fully understand pushing them into an accidental life of crime. It's the kind of story that makes you believe in the characters from the first panel onwards, also due to the excellent edgy artwork by Josh Hood with really resonant and interesting color choices by Amanda Scurti.
Black Mask describe the book thus:
WE CAN NEVER GO HOME is a comic book series about High School, Friendships, Crushes, Mixtapes, Stolen Cars, Handguns, Strange Abilities, Dead Drug Dealers, Their Money, & Life On The Run. Teenage outcast Duncan and popular girl Madison share a secret – they can do things other people can't. But their abilities take them down a dangerous path. After a deadly accident they are left with no choice: leave home and never come back. We Can Never Go Home is a new chance to fall in love with the doomed misfits who need to run away to find themselves.
