How 'Shazam!' Director David F. Sandberg Is Dealing With Fan Expectations

When you're dealing with characters that have been around for decades fans are going to have certain expectations when it comes to the characters. They don't always react well to change even if the change is for the better. When it comes to managing fan expectations Shazam! director David F. Sandberg is learning that you can't make everyone happy no matter how hard you try. Sandberg recently spoke to Film Riot (via Screen Rant about managing fan expectations and realizing how everything he says is being documented now.

"It's going to be interesting, just because of how hardcore the fans are. Like already, if I tweet a little something, suddenly there's blog posts and arguments, and no matter what you do, some people are just going to be disappointed. I get so many tweets about, 'You should do this!' And then someone else is like 'No, you should do this!', which is the complete opposite of that. And it's like, 'Well, okay, one of you guys is going to be disappointed.'"

It's good that Sandberg is realizing that some people are going to be mad no matter what he does now. It'll help him get through this production without losing his mind. This is the first big production that Sandberg has taken on with most of his other projects being smaller horror movies. We've all seen that directors can get easily overwhelmed by these big projects if they don't have a good head on their shoulders.

Shazam! is the next DC property to go into production and depending on how well Justice League is received it could be under a microscope. As for casting Sandberg has said that we should hear something soon. The movie is hoping to begin production next year so we should expect a casting announcement by the end of this year.

Summary: A boy is given the ability to become an adult superhero in times of need with a single magic word.

Shazam!, directed by David Sandberg, will be written by Henry Gayden. It will be released on April 5th, 2019.
