Marvel And Star Wars Films Will Be Exclusive To New Disney Streaming Service

It was pretty big news when Disney announced they were going to be launching their own streaming service. Several questions arose, mostly around whether or not the Disney owned properties of Marvel and Star Wars would continue to be available on Netflix. It seemed like they would stay, as the Marvel original series are co-owned by Netflix.

Today, that changed. Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed the exclusivity of the Disney-owned IPs to their new streaming service. Speaking at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2017 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference in Los Angeles on Thursday, Iger said:

"I have described a very rich, treasure trove of content for this app. We're going to launch big, and we're going to launch hot."

Early discussions about this new service include four to five original Disney series per Iger, something the House of Mouse hasn't really done in the digital streaming world. There was also the news that the new service will also have its existing television library, probably including the years of animated tv series (Hercules, Aladdin, etc) as well as the live-action stuff.

CNBC went on to speculate about the chance international versions of the service will launch before U.S. due to rights streaming rights clearances.

Still no word on how much the service (ballpark) may or may not cost, or when we could see the first version.
