Hal Jordan and the GL Corps #35 Review: Four Legs on a Table
Green Lanterns Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, and Kyle Rayner have arrived at the hidden base of the Controllers. Inside are the last of the Guardians, whose very essence is being sapped to create new Controllers. These four Green Lanterns are the only ones to save them, and naught but an army of deadly mercenaries stand in their way.
Robert Venditti continues his incredible run on Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps with a simple and straightforward tale of camaraderie and sacrificing for those we care about. He brings the first four Green Lanterns of Earth together in a phenomenal fashion. They play off of each other so well, and each one is allowed to show their strengths.
Guy Gardner gets to be the main star of this issue, getting to show how much of a stubborn and hard-nosed badass he can be. In convincing the other three that calling in back-up would be folly, he says, "There's four legs on a table, four walls on a house, and four seats in a Mustang GT. We are the four corpsmen. You don't screw with what works."
The Controllers are quite compelling villains with their quest to save their race. Ganthet gets some really cool moments to stand defiant before his long-separated kin. Sayd gets a really cool moment too.
Jack Herbert's artwork continues to astonish in its detail, depth, and form. The four corpsmen look incredible. The Controllers actually look a bit creepy. Jason Wright's colorwork is bright and popping as ever.
I know I'm beginning to sound like a broken record on this one. I've been giving this comic high marks for quite some time. However, it's only to tell you that you should certainly be reading this comic. It's easily one of DC's best books coming out. The writing is fantastic. It has a solid rotating stable of artists. Pick this one up. Give it a read. I highly recommend it.
