Super Bowl Ad Features Mikaela Shiffrin in Captain Marvel Ski Uniform

Olympic gold medalist Mikaela Shiffrin will be featured in a Super Bowl ad for the Winter Games on NBC wearing her Captain Marvel ski uniform.

Article Summary

  • Olympic champion Mikaela Shiffrin stars in a Super Bowl ad for NBC.
  • Shiffrin wears a Captain Marvel ski suit, inspiring young fans.
  • She is renowned for her record-breaking World Cup victories.
  • The ad ties in with Marvel Comics and the upcoming Captain Marvel film.

The idea of having the U.S. Olympic Ski Team wear uniforms inspired by Marvel Comics characters looks like a pretty good deal for the publisher, as an upcoming Super Bowl commercial for the Winter Olympic games on NBC prominently features Mikaela Shiffrin inspiring a young girl with her A.B.F.T.T.B. acronym, which stands for "always be faster than the boys." And through part of the commercial she is wearing her Captain Marvel inspired uniform. The video is set to the Chuck Berry classic Johnny B. Goode.

Shiffrin is an alpine skier who took gold in the Winter Games in Sochi in 2014 in slalom (she's actually the youngest to ever win gold in the event), and will be competing once again in Pyeongchang, South Korea in February.  Born on March 13, 1995, Shiffrin has a record-breaking number of World Cup victories, making her the most successful alpine skier in the competition's history for both genders. Shiffrin has secured two Olympic Gold Medals and has clinched the Overall World Cup champion title five times. She has also achieved four world championship titles in slalom and has won the World Cup discipline title in slalom seven times. Notably, Shiffrin became the youngest athlete to win an Olympic slalom gold medal in alpine skiing history at the age of 18 years and 345 days.

This is one of five videos featuring the "Best of the U.S." that NBC will be airing during their Super Bowl broadcast on Sunday. The commercials that run during the Super Bowl are some of the most expensive (unless you own the network) of any show during the year and many fans tune in as much for them as the do for the game itself. Marvel is getting a bit of free advertising here for the comics and the upcoming Captain Marvel movie.
