'Black Lightning' Preview: Will Jennifer Reign Down a "Pillar of Fire" on Tobias? [VIDEO, IMAGES]
The CW's Black Lightning comes charging back on Monday, February 12 with new episode "Pillar of Fire" wrapping up "The Book of Secrets" storyline. Jennifer Pierce (China Anne McClain) is one of the last people I'd want as my enemy, and with her grieving the loss of Khalil, vowing to take revenge on Tobias Whale (Marvin Jones III), and still not in control of her powers? I'd stay out of her way.
Unfortunately, the official synopsis from the CW doesn't offer a lot of clues:
Black Lightning s02e13 "The Book of Secrets: Chapter Three: Pillar of Fire": Lynn (Christine Adams) works on two of the pod kids in a segregated safe room. Meanwhile, Jennifer (China Anne McClain) plots revenge and Jefferson (Cress Williams) receives some interesting news. Lastly, Anissa (Nafessa Williams) makes a shocking discovery. Marvin Jones III and James Remar also star.
Robert Townsend directed the episode written by Lamont Magee.
Not much help, but these teaser images and trailer following provide a few more clues. First, one of the things I'm most excited for is the return of Perenna (Erika Alexander)–last seen pwning a group of Markovian special forces kidnappers, as both Jennifer's therapist and confidante.
Perenna has amazing power and perspective beyond whatever meta-abilities she has. Let's face it–being the kid of Jefferson Pierce and Lynn Stewart can't be easy. Perenna offers that outside perspective and outlet that any adolescent child of demanding parents would need.
Next, we have Inspector Henderson (Damon Gupton) and Gambi (James Remar) doing some police work:
I like the subtle dig at societal expectations: Gambi can infiltrate a police investigation by simply donning a CSI cap and no one gives him a second look as a white man. Interesting to see that even in Freeland, white privilege is very, very real. Speaking of Gambi, the most interesting bit from the synopsis was that he and Anissa "make a shocking discovery":
Best bet is that they're looking into the disappearance of Anissa's girlfriend Grace (Chantal Thuy), who seems to have taken off at the end of the last episode "Just and Unjust." We know she has some sort of meta-powers, but Anissa does not–I'm putting five bucks on Anissa and Gambi finding this out.
Next, we get a look at Lynn's work with the pod children:
Yes! More Bill Duke as Agent Odell! He has been such a great presence in the past few episodes and I hope he continues to show up as a secondary antagonist.
We see a lot more of Jennifer using her powers and tracking down Tobias in the episode trailer:
