James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez Talk Alita: Battle Angel Sequel Plans

A lot of things can kneecap a movie by the time the credits roll. Sometimes the movie itself isn't very good or maybe something happened behind the scenes that made everything fall apart. Maybe the movie was good but just couldn't make back an inflated budget. A little-known fact in the movie industry is that almost every movie, even more so major blockbusters, are pitched as trilogies. While a single movie might be telling a story, there should always be an opening for a sequel.

That is very much the case for Alita: Battle Angel but whether or not the movie is going to get a sequel is still up in the air. Digital Spy spoke to director Robert Rodriguez and producer James Cameron about if there are plans for a sequel. Rodriguez believes that they set up for a sequel in this movie but, to remain spoiler free, do tell a complete story.

"She now knows who she is, and she's got a target, and it's still a complete story with a beginning, middle and end," said Rodriguez.

Cameron went on to say that they do have plans for a sequel but that they don't want to put the cart before the horse. He cites another big blockbuster that had an ending that set up for a sequel and then became "mock-able".

"Well, we obviously have a plan for that," he told us. "But it's cheeky to set up a sequel before you're proven. That can blow back in your face. We think of something like Warcraft that was clearly set up with the intention to do sequels, and then it becomes mock-able because the film doesn't succeed. But I don't worry about stuff like that. If the film fails, it's its own punishment, you know? It doesn't matter if we get mocked on top of having failed."

There are plans though, and Cameron has them all written down. Rodriguez tells a story about how Cameron told him he wouldn't send "all the 1,000 pages of notes. I'll send you like 600." So it's clear that people are thinking about the future in a big way but Rodriguez explains that that's just how Cameron is.

"There's like one whole document about the trilogy," said Rodriguez. "Because that's just part of his process. 'Here are three movies. Just so you know what to include in the first story and whatnot.'"

At the moment, the odds for a sequel for Alita: Battle Angel is very up in the air. The early reviews aren't great and the domestic box office predictions aren't looking so good either. However, this could be one of those movies that does really well overseas. We'll have to see; the future of the Alita: Battle Angel franchise is in the hands of moviegoers.

A deactivated female cyborg is revived, but cannot remember anything of her past life and goes on a quest to find out who she is.

Alita: Battle Angel, directed by Robert Rodriguez, stars Rosa Salazar, Eiza González, Jennifer Connelly, Michelle Rodriguez, Mahershala Ali, Christoph Waltz, and Jackie Earle Haley. It will be released on February 14th.
