Kevin Feige Explains Why the Title for Avengers: Endgame Is Considered a Spoiler

It seems even Marvel can fall prey to their own hype machine. For months we didn't know the title for the upcoming Avengers: Endgame and anytime someone asked a person at Marvel would say that they couldn't tell us because it was a spoiler. We all sat on the edges of our seats for months wondering what the title was and why it was such a big spoiler that they were hiding it until it was finally revealed; Avengers: Endgame. Then we all sat back and wondered why that was considered such a big deal. It wasn't a bad title but it also didn't seem like that big of a spoiler either. Collider decided to ask Kevin Feige about it and he admitted that things got a little out of hand.

"Well, I think I'd said that it all had gotten blown out of proportion to some extent. But it was a spoiler, because if you knew before Infinity War came out that the next movie was called Endgame, then you know that there wasn't an ending to Infinity War. But that had been the title of the movie from the moment we conceived of doing the two films. In large part, because…it's seeded right there. I mean, it's seeded in Ultron."

Kevin Feige Explains Why the Title for Avengers: Endgame Is Considered a Spoiler

The idea that they wanted to make sure people saw these as two different movies is an interesting one, but maybe not quite the best excuse for the sheer level of secrecy. Yes, the title did give away the fact that Avengers: Infinity War wouldn't have the ending we expected. However, there was really no excuse once we got into the mid-summer; they could have just said the title and we would have moved on until the poster release date. There is enough hype for this movie that it ultimately didn't matter but this could have easily backfired on Marvel. They got lucky this time and they would be wise to take that to heart.
