"Animal Kingdom" Season 4, Episode 5 "Reap": Smurf Puts Her Boys In Check [SPOILER REVIEW]

So Smurf has cancer… and now Pope knows. Mia continues to be a trifling and blackmailing bitch… as J grows more cocky by the second. That's not even close to covering where everything stands as we head into this week's episode of TNT's Animal Kingdom, "Reap." – here's what we thought.

Suffice to say… MAJOR SPOILERS ahead:

In Craig land, Ren is back and very pregnant. Also… back dealing drugs? But not using. At least one character in this show makes decent life choices. Oh! She's also looking for a house – ten bucks says she ends up moving in with Craig and they raise the baby together (which is his anyway, if I recall correctly. If not, I'm calling it now.).

Adrian made surf finals, and Deran confronts his jerk-face drug supplier who's so sleazy, I've already forgotten his name. But I know I don't like him, because he is the reason sweet little Adrian is up against DEA Agent "A-hole."

Speaking of Adrian, he surfed really well and won the qualifiers, so this means he's moving on to the finals. Finally, something good is happening in his life! …until

In the swinging 70s, Janine learns how to drive, in an effort to not be the weak link of the crew.

Smurf butts heads with Angela, who nobody wants there… except for Pope. Probably because he's thinking with an organ other than his brain.

Speaking of thinking with things other than brains… J meets up for a study date with his classmate Olivia.

Craig meets up with Frankie, who pays them most of what they agreed and proposes the boys make even more with another job…with of course, delayed payment again. Craig basically spits in her face and takes the really adorably gift-wrapped money and runs.

Geez, somebody needs to learn about "delayed gratification." I guess when you're a high-caliber criminal, trusting a near-stranger and also criminal to pay you isn't such a bright idea.

Speaking of Frankie, after that little proverbial slap in the face, she decides to go directly to Smurf and give her the cut of last week's art heist job. Frankie tries to take the new job to Smurf, who gets pissed. I think that might have been Frankie's plan all along.

Pope and Angela get it on (finally!) and in a weird creepy scene, Smurf listens in. Clearly, mother of the year behavior.

The next morning, J's walk of shame includes running into Olivia's mom, who's planning for a massive high-profile event…which J is going to help with, likely because if he's as smart as he keeps claiming, he's going to set sights on it for his next mark.

Adrian's drug mule career finally gets explained when Deran confronts him about how stupid it is – if he needed money, he could have come to him. But it's not about the money, it's about retaining his independence and earning real money on his own. Of course he regrets it now that he's being hounded by Agent Asshole.

The whole scene is really sweet and I absolutely love Adrian and just want him to have an adorably domestic life with Deran. Of course, things are going to end badly for them because we find out that Agent Asshole totally lied and he gets no immunity – so sweet little Adrian is going to jail just because he wanted to be independent.

If only he had listened to his adorable boyfriend! Guess what? He's the real reason the agents are squeezing him so hard – Agent A-hole wants the Cody crime family, and he's probably thinking that by destroying Deran's boyfriend, he's going to get Deran to flip on his family and sing for a RICO case, or something. Unlikely, Agent A-hole – just please go camping amongst a clan of hungry bears, and don't forget to pack your steak-soaked underwear!

In a passive aggressive display of power, Smurf has the boys over for dinner and reams them for taking outside jobs and demands her cut of the job…even though she knows full well they got shorted and Frankie already gave her a cut. Classic sneaky Smurf.

In response to Smurf's rage and demands of cash they so don't have, the boys corner the art heist buyer and demand to be paid. I have a very funny feeling that he paid in full and Frankie is the one they should be raging at, but they have no idea of that.

And in the final moments of the episode, J closes his bowling alley for the night and walks outside… to be assaulted by who I'm assuming is either Tupi or a generic Latino gangster sent by Tupi / Mia. He pulls a gun on J, but J gets the jump on him and he flees before he can stand his ground.

Who has it out for J? Will Smurf get the boys to stop taking jobs outside the family? Will poor sweet Adrian and Deran finally catch a break and stop being harassed by Agent A-hole? Perhaps most important? Will Angela stick around to keep Pope stressed out enough for their next job?

We'll find out together next week when Animal Kingdom returns to TNT with "Into the Black"
