"Mr. Robot" 402 "Payment Required": Dead Mom, Dark Army, and… "The Other One"? [SPOILER REVIEW]
Hello again, friend. Things are going to Hell in a hand basket, but Elliot seems pretty calm about the whole thing – while everybody falls to pieces at Whiterose's plan. USA Network's latest Mr. Robot is full of excitement, anticipation, and of course – spoilers
Oh, yes – there will be SPOILERS…
So at the end of last week's episode, Phillip Price saved Elliot from being drugged by Dark Army. Now, he tells him the story of how Zhang rose to power, giving the technological revolution a sinister sub-plot.
Long story short though, Phillip Price and Elliot are plotting to bring down Whiterose. How? Cypress National bank!
The planning session is short lived though when Elliot gets a not as cheery call from Darlene: their mother died. Sad, but it looks like she was living in a nursing home, so hopefully she lived a good life and is not longer suffering.
As they clean out her room, we learn that she had a secret safe deposit box… and that she was kind of "an asshole" to them, in Darlene's words.
On a cheerier note, Dom (Grace Gummer) finally went in for her briefing / interview thing on Agent Santiago's disappearance. She is not exactly keeping calm about it, but she does finally spill that she thinks he was a double agent…for a Columbian drug cartel?!
Yep – Dark Army cover story. Oh – you didn't forget that Dom is still beholden to the Dark Army and not taking it well, right?
Speaking of not taking things well, Elliot is still refusing to deal with his feelings and Mr. Robot is concerned. Come to think of it, Darlene is wigged out by it too.
Of course, Darlene is freaking out and grieving – as one generally does when you're reminded how not in control you are – and of course, this isn't really about their terrible mother. It's about Angela.
Darlene is still pissed at Elliot for not slowing down and taking tome to properly feel feelings about Angela's death, and now it's the same argument all over again. Elliot hasn't gotten over it though – he puts on a show, but really he's just numbing himself until he takes down the Dark Army, then he can afford himself human emotions again.
Sadly though, that's very concerning for Mr. Robot and basically everyone else in his life. Because it is not a healthy coping mechanism.
Zhang is trimming the tree and Philip Price comes in to make thinly veiled threats and throw a wrench in his "game": he's resigning as CEO of E Corp. In case you were wondering if he was angry about losing a pawn, Zhang toppled his tree in anger right after he left. Not such a merry Christmas now – more like an angry one.
Now… remember that E Corp financial lady that Darlene pushed in the pool and drowned back last season while Elliot was in jail? Susan Jacobs was her name – and it turns out that she connects back to Elliot's "Operation: Bring Down the Dark Army's Bank Accounts" scheme. Oh – and if you think Darlene is going to let him do this thing alone, you're dead wrong.
Oh – and things are so not hunky dory again between Elliot and Mr. Robot…maybe? Darlene mentions that she told him about Vera being back and lurking around being creepy…but she didn't tell Elliot. Or Mr. Robot. So who did she tell?
"The Other One" is apparently who knew that Vera was back… but that just leaves us with so many questions.
Who else is in Elliot's head besides Mr. Robot? Has he always been there, or is this a new personality / delusion / mastermind?
When will we meet this mysterious mastermind "The Other One"?
Can Darlene please run a brush through her hair so she looks just a touch less manic? No? Oh well, I guess it fits her personality.
I cannot wait for next week's Mr. Robot – so far the final season is delivering mystery, suspense, and surprises. I know it's going to be over by the year's end, but I am fully wrapped up in the stories and am here for the ride.
