James Gunn Explains Why Old Timers Hating on Marvel Movies is Classic Generational Warfare

Kids these days. Why won't they get off our lawn? And also, what's with their love of superhero movies? Case in point, whippersnapper and Suicide Squad director James Gunn has taken to newfangled social media service Instagram to once again defend Marvel flicks after Francis Ford Coppola joined Martin Scorsese in trashing the genre.

Gunn wrote:

Many of our grandfathers thought all gangster movies were the same, often calling them "despicable". Some of our great grandfathers thought the same of westerns, and believed the films of John Ford, Sam Peckinpah, and Sergio Leone were all exactly the same. I remember a great uncle to whom I was raving about Star Wars. He responded by saying, "I saw that when it was called 2001, and, boy, was it boring!" Superheroes are simply today's gangsters/cowboys/outer space adventurers. Some superhero films are awful, some are beautiful. Like westerns and gangster movies (and before that, just MOVIES), not everyone will be able to appreciate them, even some geniuses. And that's okay.

Personally, we feel that the only acceptable form of cinema are silent black and white films where a villain ties a girl to railroad tracks, and the only proper way to view them is through a Kinetoscope, and frankly, kids these days are ruining it with their  Imaxes and their Netflixes, and Francis Ford Coppola agrees, saying of Marvel movies:

When Martin Scorsese says that the Marvel pictures are not cinema, he's right because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration. I don't know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again. Martin was kind when he said it's not cinema. He didn't say it's despicable, which I just say it is.

However, yet another bratty youngster disrespected her elders by coming out in support of Marvel movies, as Natalie Portman recently told sexy Dora the Explorer advocacy site The Hollywood Reporter:

I think there's room for all types of cinema. There's not one way to make art. I think that Marvel films are so popular because they're really entertaining and people desire entertainment when they have their special time after work, after dealing with their hardships in real life.

Bleeding Cool does not endorse enjoying "special time" in public movie theaters, though it does go to show just how far superhero movies have degraded America morals.
