How Sonic the Hedgehog's Success Should Pave the Way for the Snyder Cut of Justice League
As reported over the weekend, Sonic the Hedgehog's opening weekend was a success, with the movie earning more than $100 million worldwide and becoming the number one videogame based box office opening of all time. But it could have ended very differently if producers made a crucial mistake: not listening to the internet. When the first trailer for Sonic was released, it sparked a horrified reaction on the internet due to unnerving CGI that, amongst other atrocities, gave Sonic human teeth. But instead of ignoring the complaints or bickering with fans, producers vowed to change the CGI to make Sonic less unnerving and more true to the video game character's iconic look. It cost $35 million to undo the damage, but it was worth it. Sonic is a success.
It's a victory for all of the hardcore fans of Sonic the Hedgehog, a group known colloquially as Sonicbronies. And it's in stark contrast to the way another studio has treated a group of well-meaning fans with advice that could have saved an important franchise: the Snyderbronies, the hardcore fans of Zack Snyder and his grim and gritty Vision of the DC cinematic universe who have been calling for Warner Bros to release the Snyder Cut of Justice League, a version of the film that restores Zack Snyder's Vision.
As we all know, Snyder was forced to leave Justice League before production was complete due to a personal tragedy, with Warner Bros bringing in alleged fake feminist Joss Whedon to finish the movie. But instead of staying true to Snyder's Vision of a DCEU where "you're living in a f**king dream world" if you don't think superheroes kill, Whedon replaced all of Snyder's badass Superman scenes with scenes where Cyborg says "booyah." As a result Justice League flopped at the box office and former DC Films president Jon Berg paid the ultimate price. But it didn't have to be that way… and it still doesn't.
It's not too late for Warner Bros to take a cue from the folks behind Sonic the Hedgehog and listen to fans by releasing the Snyder Cut of Justice League.
