Reading the First 17 Pages of Heroes in Crisis #1

Someone sent me the first 17 pages of Heroes in Crisis #1 — apparently even alluding to what happens in the pages that follow are far too spoilery. I mean, I've heard gossip and rumours, but that's for another post. Maybe two. Maybe later today.

So what have I learned from those first 17 pages without getting too spoilery on your ass?

Well, it begins with Booster Gold in a diner in the middle of nowhere, with Harley Quinn popping in. And the realisation that this is what is dubbed "flyover country", the great lands of the United States of America that have the temerity to exist between New York and Burbank. This is emphasised by an opening double-page spread, the Heroes in Crisis logo at extreme perspective, seen from above. It's burnt into the massive farmlands in the area where this is set, almost as if Superman had used his heat vision a long time ago. This is where Sanctuary exists. A place away from the cities where superheroes can get treatment for PTSD as a result of being superheroes — and occasionally even a supervillain.

So yes, Harley Quinn, divulging some secrets that will shock longtime fans and revealing her duplicitousness in the process.

And a scene that — well, okay, this is not as disturbing as that issue of Sandman set in a diner with the Corinthian doing his worst. But, you know, there are elements here… you may not be expecting a light'n'brighty comic, but I can confirm that you are definitely not getting that here.

And yes, there are dead superheroes — some you will know, some you will need to go to Wikipedia for. You knew that was coming. No, I'm not saying their names — not in this post, anyway — but they are not heroes who were rumoured. Those, I am sure, are still to come…

There are ideas here of the places that count and those that don't. Of roads to hell being paved with good intentions. With the limits of control, and how we fool ourselves that we have more influence than we do. And the best-laid plans… well, you know the rest.

The first 17 pages of Heroes in Crisis #1 will be published by DC Comics on September 26th. With the rest of them as well, probably.
