Advance Review: Marvel's Star Wars #1 Is Already A True Classic
A long time ago, well actually this morning, in a galaxy far, far away…more like in my kitchen…(cue John Williams)… I got to read the new Star Wars comic! Written by Jason Aaron, with art by John Cassaday, Marvel's long anticipated new on-going comic is sure to please Star Wars fans. You probably already know that the series will take place in between the Star Wars IV and V storylines, and will focus on the adventures of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia, following the destruction of the Death Star. As a long time fan, I went into reading the comic with high expectations, and I'm happy to say that they were met. Issue #1 is explosive, captivating, and consistent with the existing stories.
You'll be happy to know that Aaron gives us a decent dose of all of our favorite characters, because what would a Star Wars comic be without R2D2, C3PO, and Chewbacca. I was pleasantly surprised with the number of moments throughout the script that made me laugh. Aaron's writing is clever, and he even throws in a few nods to the previous movie throughout. The characters' personalities shine through so accurately, making it impossible to find anything to complain about. I especially felt this way about Han. His sarcastic, conceited nature is on point from his very first appearance in the issue.
Cassaday's art appropriately has a classic Star Wars feel. Complete with detailed galactic landscapes, and character designs that are spot on for the famous actors that played them. It feels so good to indulge in the futuristic atmosphere we have all loved for so many years. I'm ecstatic with the way the plot has been set up, and curious about where things will go. I did have a little bit of an issue with the ending, only because I know that an instance like that can only happen so many times before it's overused…but I won't spoil it. You'll just have to find out yourselves when you rush to your local comic book store tomorrow to pick up a copy! With all of that said, May the Force be with you!
