We've often called Age of X-Man: Prisoner X the best out of all the Age of X-Man mini-series. It's a psychological thriller set in a prison and starring longtime fan-favorite X-Men character Bishop, written by Vita Ayala with art by German Peralta, and makes excellent use of the concept of an alternate reality "utopia" where X-Man has outlawed any personal connections, especially romantic and sexual relationships. In Prisoner X, Bishop finds himself in prison after he's discovered to be having a sexual relationship with fellow X-Men team member Jean Grey, and apparently it's happened too many times for Department X to just give him a mindwipe and let him go about his business.
But those events, which occurred in the bookend Age of X-Man: Alpha comic that kickstarted the Age of X-Man, almost happened very differently, as Marvel Senior Editor Jordan White revealed in the latest X-Men Monday column at Adventures in Poor Taste.
AiPT!: Speaking of alternate universe X-Romances, Jean and Bishop in the Age of X-Man is an interesting one–definitely more "out of nowhere" than Jean and Logan in the AoA–but it's still interesting to think about their dynamic! How did that pairing come about?
Jordan: It was always in Zac Thompson and Lonnie Nadler's pitch that Bishop be caught in a forbidden relationship in the first issue of Age of X-Man, knowing that he was going to be whisked away to the Prisoner X series, but I think originally it was with Storm. I think we ended up shifting it to Jean mostly because we have seen Jean in so few relationships that it would be a more surprising reveal for Jean and Bishop to be the secret couple rather than Ororo and Bishop. That said, I think Jean and Bishop make a really interesting pair. Personality-wise, I can see them getting along. It's too bad we saw so little of it.
So what do you think, X-Fans? Would you have preferred an illegal love affair with Storm had sent Bishop off to be psychologically tortured in the Danger Room prison? Or are you happy with Bishop and Jean as the X-Men's secret lovers? Let us know in the comments.
