Bleeding Cool Bestseller List – 10th July 2016 – DC And Image Squeezing Out Marvel

STL010784

This is the Top Ten Bleeding Cool Bestseller List, as compiled by a number of comic stores from their sales on Wednesday and Thursday. It measures what are known as the "Wednesday Warriors", those who can't wait to the weekend to get this week's comics. We salute you, and the keenness you bring to your passion.

DC Comics take the top three and have six of the top ten, with Image taking two and Marvel squeezing in two as well. And Batman returns to its traditional top spot, even without Snyder and Capullo. Have King and Finch inherited their throne? But Rebirth seems to be doing the business for DC, and Marvel are seeing their big hitters squeezed out. Only one retailer even mentioned Civil War II: X-Men…

  • 1. Batman #2
  • 2. Justice League Rebirth #1
  • 3. Superman #2
  • 4. Walking Dead #156
  • 5. Amazing Spider-Man #15
  • 6. Green Arrow #2
  • 7. Green Lanterns #2
  • 8. Aquaman #2
  • 9. Star Wars: Han Solo #2
  • 10. Paper Girls #7

Thanks to the following retailers,

Who had this to say.

Had a Great week! Had our Biggest Wednesday in our 8 year history.  Every Publisher had a huge sell through.

DC Rebirth continues to sell a crazy amount of issues to a lot of new and long time fans. We are incredibly happy with the numbers on the second issues and hope the momentum stays even close to where it is. People coming in for Rebirth are also starting to check out other non-DC titles including Marvel and a lot of indie books as well, so this is a great thing for the whole industry!

Selling lots of Walking Dead back issues as always and Outcast is really starting to pick up. Still selling crazy numbers on the first issues of Rebirth as new people are coming in everyday through word of mouth or through the TV commercials. I am not sure where they're coming from, but they're definitely showing up in droves and we're very happy to have so many new readers.

Good week. Rebirth still going strong. Green Lanterns here showing the most drop off so far of the Rebirthed titles. Marvel sales wise is dropping hard. The Civil War spin offs such as Kingpin are dead on arrival. Which means we lost money on the title. In Invincible Iron Man 11 Warmachine is still alive because the title is still on the "Road to Civil War" even though Bendis writes the title along with Civil War II which has its third issue due out next week. People don't want to read about the lead up to Civil War when the War already started months ago. Not sure if DC's previous lackluster sales made Marvel lazy but currently DC is destroying Marvel here sales wise. Hopefully DC has a plan and things don't go the way the new 52 did. Meaning a great start but no follow up.

This week, in spite of a supposedly strong line from Marvel, not a single Marvel superhero title made it into our store's Top Ten. Marvel took ninth and tenth place in our store with their two Star Wars offerings; the highest-ranked Marvel superhero title took twelfth place, with sales about 15% the sales of our top-ranked book, Justice League: Rebirth. This summer has turned into a disaster for Marvel, and every announcement of major changes, fall plotlines, etc., seems to encourage that many more readers to decide to bail early. Thankfully, many of them are moving to DC instead of just leaving comics–but we've never seen so many established readers display such disdain for Marvel's superhero books. The worst sign of all: Marvel's books are being routinely mocked, indicating that even the readers are tired of overdone gimmicks, deaths, character replacements, etc.

Impressive interest in pre-Flashpoint Batman and Justice League titles. On the Marvel side, silver and bronze age Spider-Man sales have picked up.

Another Great week for DC Comics which is really no surprise. What is a pleasant surprise is with all the new customers soaking up all the Rebirth titles like sponges, they are now looking at Marvel and Civil War II and buying those up. Great indicator that these new customers are looking to be long term and not a flash in the pan….at least at this store. Might be helping that i actually talk to customers when they come in and not grumble at them which i have heard has happened at a few stores before they found me.

Something about Vision and Iron Man has happened to cause some interest in older issues. Marvel must be moving along with the master plan to turn all super heroes in too just females. Which is cool…one big chick fight would be great to watch.

Of course, Walking Dead took the top spot for us, that extra bump of speculator hype certainly helped. If there was ever any proof in the power of DC Rebirth, it's this week. We upped our orders and still have almost sold out of the new batch of books. Plus, the second printings are selling just as well as the first printings! Interesting that of the Marvel releases this week, only Amazing Spider-Man and two Star Wars books cracked our top ten. Speaking of Star Wars, it's surprising how low Han Solo is selling. You'd think this would be on par with the regular Star Wars series or the Vader one, but it's just not connecting for some reason.

Man, Riri Williams is BLOWING UP. Back issues of Invincible Iron Man 7, 8, and 9 are all going for $20-$25. Amazing what a big announcement can do for a book that had previously stalled out sales wise.

While DC Rebirth took the top 4 spots we are starting to see a drop off on certain titles (Aquaman and Green Lanterns sales are cooling off). Marvel is also making a comeback with 3 titles on the top ten (and if we would have had tons of Invincible Iron Man #7 it would have easily been the top book, everybody wants that book now). This upcoming week should be interesting with Civil War II #3 going up against three new Rebirth titles, Who will be the champion !!
