Fairest #10 by Adam Hughes

Oh deer! So if you're a regular reader of this column, you'll know of my infatuation with these Adam Hughes Fairest covers. They're always featuring a beautiful scantily clad woman, which would be the homerun for a lot of people, but it's what's surrounding the woman that always makes it a grand slam for me. The giant cat with the glowing eye, the deer with a nice rack, the majestic spackle that's present all over. This cover is just as gorgeous as the ones before it, and Hughes makes look like child's play. I'm waiting in anticipation for the eventual Fairest: The Adam Hughes Covers book to go along with my James Jean edition.

Hawkeye #5 by David Aja

So while I didn't highlight the cover to Hawkeye #4, the last issue consisted of just the tape in tons of empty space, with some audio waveform along the bottom. It was nice, but didn't really thrill me. This issue however, has my undivided attention. First of all, what kind of bully beats up a VHS tape?! Haven't VHS tapes been embarrassed enough over the past decade, with the rise of DVDs and BluRays?? Now that I think about it though, who has something to gain if the VHS tape is no longer around? That's right, our prime suspect Betamax has everything to gain! It's relevant again! Anyway, lovely cover by Aja, and now I know what Kill Bill looked like on VHS.

Shadowman #2 (Variant) by Dave Johnson

While I feel that I've seen this kind of cover by Johnson before (possibly one of the PunisherMAX ones), it's still fresh nonetheless. The black and white with a touch of pale green color scheme is what my eyes are initially drawn to, then I slowly become creeped out a bit by the shadow eyes and twisted mouth. I've never read Shadowman, but just looking at this guy sends me the message that I do not want our paths crossing. So much blood! So many eyes! Very well executed cover.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow – Wonderland #2 by David Mack

This is my favorite cover of the week, hands down! Now were I Alyson Hannigan, I'd be honored to be a part of a series like Buffy, because if it continues on in the comics medium, every artist would illustrate me forever young. That, my friends, is immortality thanks to artist extraordinaires like David Mack. I'll admit, I was getting lost in Willow's eyes, but I was also marveling at the intricate snake skeleton weaving throughout the cover. Every rib and vertebrae accounted for. Throw in some pieces of scribbled parchment here and there, and this cover is just plain magical to look at!
