Yes, it happens to the best of us. We fall behind on the comics that we swore we wouldn't. Perhaps it's because I like to set aside time to savor anything Gail Simone writes. None the less, this morning I sat down, after the SDCC craze began to cool, and read the last three issues of Clean Room, written by Simone, with art by Jon Davis-Hunt. It seemed like I picked a great place to stop reading because the explosive beginning at the start of issue #8 had me flipping pages faster than ever.

[WARNING: SPOILERS FOR CLEAN ROOM BELOW!]

For those of you who don't know, Astrid gets shot while speaking at a lecture to her fans. The someone that shoots her, claims to be her brother, and yeah the pink things are involved in everything too. In fact, upon her death bed, Astrid requests that Chloe be brought in. To my surprise, Chloe agrees, but brings a pink demon along with her in the hopes that he will be able to save Astrid from dying. During the course of two issues, I really wasn't sure if Astrid was going to make it. It seemed that Simone had set up enough story and characters to keep her world going without her in it. It was a frightening thought. Astrid is what makes Clean Room so fantastic for me. She's powerful and nutty. Something that her workers/followers can't quite match.

A surprising twist was the vulnerable side to the pink demon, named Spark. I actually found myself thinking, "Awww, he's scared. Don't hurt him." Yep, and if you've seen these things, you wouldn't believe me. They're ugly. None the less, Spark was able to save Astrid. However, upon coming back to life, Astrid decides to take a vacation. That brings us to the most recent issue, #10. It seems that Astrid is considering retirement, while Chloe is receiving tons of gifts for her help. Man, I'd like to receive a new car and a credit card with no limit. Wouldn't you? But what's really fascinating is the concept of "The Ark." The world is going to hell, well…hell is coming to the world. But if you have a blue card to one of "The Ark buildings," you're going to be protected from it. Chloe receives one in this issue.

Here's what I'm hoping. I hope that we can see Simone's imagination in full force and we can get to that point of hell on earth. I'd like to see the buildings that are meant to protect the chosen few, and experience just how crazy this comic can get. It's one of the most intense comics I'm reading right now, and I'm sure it's one of the most terrifying comics of all time. With that said, the balance of it all, great writing and detailed art makes Clean Room a comic you don't want to miss.
