Comics "Per Capita" Marketshare Tells A Different Story For May 2016

pie-sampleThis is an attempt to run a slightly different filter over May's comic book marketshare figures. It may work, it may not. Tell me what you think.

We've run the May marketshare figures which shows Marvel way up ahead and Dark Horse way down. But a lot of this may have more to do with the companies publishing more – or less – titles, rather than each comic selling more.

So what we have done is take the retail marketshare, how much money the company's comics actually sell for – and dividing them by how many comic book titles the company sells that month. Working out the retail marketshare… per capita.

Because when you do, the market looks a little different.  Oh and each percentage figure multiplied by 100 so it's easier to visually compare…

  • Marvel 389
  • DC 357
  • Image 195
  • Dark Horse 163
  • IDW 114
  • Valiant 109
  • Boom 105
  • Oni 98
  • Dynamite 87
  • Titan 87

Suddenly the difference between Marvel and DC is far smaller, Dark Horse performs almost as well as Image, and better than both Boom and IDW, and Valiant does better than IDW and Boom too. And Oni jumps up as well.

This filter also has its flaws. But it does help point out that there are other ways of looking at the data…
