Five Saturday C2E2 Panels I'd Attend If I Wasn't Sick
I planned to attend C2E2, and then I caught a co-worker's post-SXSW bug. Ah well. If I went today, I'd sit in on these panels. There's only one conflict, choosing between an Image panel discussion on the craft of coloring and a TKO Studios panel.
The Future Is Now
Sat, Mar 23, 2019
12:30 PM – 1:30 PM
S405a
Top science fiction and fantasy authors discuss the predictions of near-future SF– what has come true, and what might be coming to pass? They'll also share their predictions for what Chicago will look like 50 years (or more!) from now. Featuring: Sue Burke (Semiosis), Cory Doctorow (Radicalized), Mary Robinette Kowal (The Calculating Stars and The Fated Sky), and Alison Wilgus (Chronin)
It looks like a Tor Books joint, and they're often generous with free books, so I think it's worth sticking your head in. I hear great things about Robinette Kowal's alt-history series called the Lady Astronaut series, the first two of which she's presumably promoting at the con. Beyond Wakanda: The Rise Of Afrofuturism In Pop Culture And Comics
Sat, Mar 23, 2019
1:45 PM – 2:45 PM
S403
From the comic page to screens big and small, Black voices and Black characters are making themselves seen and heard in all corners of pop culture. Hear from creators in the worlds of comics, music, film and more as this panel explores creating a future and a present as seen through a black lens.
You could do a lot worse than a panel on Afrofuturism with a Pushcart Prize winning poet (Dr. Eve Ewing) and Daryl McDaniels of Run DMC. Also, Afua Richardson's work is pretty good too. Spotlight On: Iron Circus Comics
Sat, Mar 23, 2019
2:30 PM – 3:30 PM
S503
This panel will highlight the strange and amazing titles that Iron Circus Comics has just released or will be available in 2019 and 2020. Featuring Iron Circus founder C. Spike Trotman and creators including: Kel McDonald (Cautionary Fables and Fairytales), Blue Delliquanti (Meal), Lisa Naffziger (Minus), and Emily Riesbeck (It's Your Funeral) this is an exclusive look behind the scenes at one of the fastest growing indie comic publishers. See how the Iron Circus gears turn and get a peek at upcoming titles!
Iron Circus' founder and impresario C. Spike Trotman is usually good for a one liner or two. Why I'd actually go is because I'd get a good idea of their publishing schedule for the next twelve months. TKO Studios: Binge Releasing And The Future Of Comics
Sat, Mar 23, 2019
5:15 PM – 6:15 PM
S405b
TKO Studios co-founder Tze Chun and creators talk about TKO's disruptive publishing company, radical distribution model, and answer questions from the audience.
This one's a wild card. TKO arrived recently with a lot of big names attached, so I'd gamble on their spotlight panel to see what they've got on hand. (https://www.c2e2.com/Features/Panels-And-Screenings/Event-Information/?gtID=542353&panel-name=TKO-Studios-Binge-Releasing-and-The-Future-of-Comics)
In Living Color: Comics Colorists On Craft
Sat, Mar 23, 2019
5:30 PM – 6:30 PM
S405a
From the rain-slicked streets of urban sprawl to the farthest reaches of outer space, the comic colorist brings the story to life by adding mood, tone and dimension to a story. An integral part of any comic team, hear from some of the best colorists working today as they go behind the scenes of their colorful creations. Don't miss this peek behind the curtain as the unsung heroes behind so many of your favorite titles discuss what it's like to make comics magic happen!
Image colorists and pencillers talk craft. There's bound to be a couple great anecdotes. If you're a student of the medium, you'll probably also walk away with a new idea or technique. Matt Wilson, Richard Isanove, Rachelle Rosenberg, Stephanie Hans and Micheal Garland. Oliver Sava moderates.
