Flavor #2 Review: Charming, Energetic, and Creative
We meet a boy named Anant, a student at the prestigious culinary academy in the Bowl. He is struggling in his education, but his father is very excited that his son gets to attend this academy. Back with Xoo, she and Geof are working her parent's restaurant. However, Xoo has not given up on obtaining Garuda Truffles, and she and Buster go down to the black market to obtain the prized ingredient.
Flavor continues its compelling story of the Bowl in style this issue. The first installment introduced to this foreign-yet-familiar world where cooking and culinary artistry are held in the highest esteem and the charming, determined, yet troubled protagonist named Xoo.
Here, we learn some of Anant, another troubled youth in this society. He is on the opposite end of the social ladder, and he has a connection to Xoo. If you can guess it, don't spoil it for others.
We learn a little more about the world and how it works. Xoo gets more moments to be headstrong and charming. Buster steals every scene he's in, and it's never explained why this dog is functionally a human (and I'm completely okay with that.)
The comic ends on a surprisingly intense note, and it leaves me interested in where the next issue takes this.
Wook Jin Clark once more provides great artwork that injects a lot of visual personality and flow into the world. Each character is distinct, expressive, and looks charming. Buster slightly morphs to whatever human task he's doing in the moment. Have I mentioned that I really like Buster?
Tamra Bonvillain brings more life and vibrance in the color art, which provides a bright and well-balanced assortment of shades to the book.
Flavor #2 is another fun, charming, and even child-friendly issue to this fledgling Image series. The world is interesting and creative, the characters are endearing and easy to follow, and the art is full of life and personality. This one earns another recommendation. Check it out.
