'Fluff That Guy!' – I Hate Fairyland #1 Is A Riot
We all love fairytales, right? Well, at least you would assume that most young people do. However, what happens when a journey to a fairytale land isn't quite received so well? From Image Comics, written and illustrated by Skottie Young, I Hate Fairyland #1 begins to answer that question with a new comic that shows us a different side of unique creatures living in a colorful world.
Main character Gertrude had me laughing out loud from the beginning of the comic. After wishing to be sent to a magical land, Gertrude is sent to Fairyland, but her reaction to that isn't what you'd typically expect. Her arrival is turbulent, and although she's greeted by a plethora of fascinating characters, Queen Cloudia, an her guide Larrigon Wentsworth III, Gertrude has a hard time adjusting. However, we don't exactly get to know how things played out after that initial landing. Young throws us twenty-seven years into the future. While she may look like she hasn't aged a day, the sweeter innocent looking Gertrude is no longer filled with hope. She's an edgy, angry girl with a fiery spirit.
This has been one of my most highly anticipated releases since I found out about it months and months ago. Skottie Young is such a unique admirable creator, so it's easy to predict how much fun it's going to be to read his comics. I love the humor and sarcasm he incorporates into the script. Plus, it's an interesting feeling to be transported to such a radiant world, and be witness to the moon and stars being blown up. From the subtle additions of "fluff that guy" and the haggard appearance of our main characters, I'm looking forward to discovering what happened in Fairyland the past twenty-seven years. My guess is we are in for a rollercoaster ride of sass and surprises with I Hate Fairyland! Be sure to grab a copy of issue #1 this week.
