Frank Cho Fight Girls Cover Withdrawn Due To Frank Frazetta Estate

Bedrock City Comic Co of Houston, Texas, had a retailer exclusive variant cover lined up for the new Fight Girls #1 comic book by Frank Cho and published today by AWA. They also had a big signing with Frank Cho arranged as well. But then everything went south. They posted to Facebook last night;

We have some unfortunate news regarding the Fight Girls #1 Exclusive Cover by Frank Cho which was slated for release tomorrow. July 7th, 2021. Frank Cho chose to paint a beautiful homage to Frank Frazetta's cover for Creepy Magazine #16, and he used that art as the subject of our exclusive cover. Unfortunately, the Frazetta estate has taken issue with the usage of that image. As this exclusive cover bears the Bedrock City logo, and we have been actively marketing its sale, we are now the focus of the Frazettas' cease and desist demands. Therefore, until the legal use issues are ironed out between AWA Publishing, Frank Cho, and the Frazetta estate, Bedrock City will not be able to offer the Fight Girls #1 Exclusive Cover to our customers. We are terribly sorry for the inconveniences that the real world is dumping on us and all of you.

Frank Frazetta's estate issuing cease and desist notices over homages is a new thing. There have certainly been plenty of such homages over the years from big names and big publishers. In response, Frank Frazetta's granddaughter Sara Frazetta of Frazetta Girls tweeted out

Not sure who has heard the news but I need to address this – the Frazetta estate was divided in 2010 after my grandparents passed. Frazetta Girls does not own this copyright. We stand by homages and believe it's important in the comic world. I hope it's resolved soon.

Below is what the comic book cover was meant to look like. You can compare it with Frank Frazetta's original Cat Girl painting here.
