Frank Miller's On-Again, Off-Again Detective #27 Had Been Off For A Long Time

The much talked about and even parodied cover for Detective Comics #27 may have a longer backstory than we first knew.

According to Brandon Montclare, the former editor of All-Star Batman And Robin, The Boy Wonder… the piece was original drawn for that series but they never had a chance to use it.

Frank Miller's cover to Detective 27!  It's cool that this image is finally seeing the light of day on an official cover.  It was drawn a few years back during All Star Batman & Robin, the Boy Wonder—but there was never a chance to use it.  I still, however, often think about where exactly that tail is attached…

So if it's been sitting in a drawer somewhere, why was there a question of the cover coming out? Did someone not want to use it? Or was there supposed to be a different cover that never came about and this was substituted in to make the solicitation?
