Kevin Maguire Takes Tanga From DC Comics

Weird Worlds was a DC Comics series revived just before the New 52 happened. Running for 6 issues, it featured Lobo and two new characters, Aaron Lopresti's Garbage Man and Kevin Maguire's Tanga. As the New 52 occurred these characters switched to the New 52 title, My Greatest Adventure. for another 6 issues and with Lobo replaced by Robotman.

Tanga was part of the DC Comics Universe, and mentioned running into several notable cosmic figures in the DC Universe such as Lobo and the Green Lanterns specifically. However, in both of her runs there were no actual appearances by any DC characters.

Kevin Maguire had the an idea for a character that he first called My Space Girl, inspired by the glamour model Carla Brown. It was DC publisher Dan Didio who spoke to Maguire the first appearance of this character, including R.E.B.E.L.S. and Metal Men, but Weird Worlds was picked, and that meant the character could be creator-owned.

Which is handy right now as Maguire has been able to take Tanga from DC Comics, after nine years of non-publication, and take the character to Image Comics – though it is likely references to DC character may have to be amended.

UPDATE: Despite being listed as an Image Comics title from Amazon, Image Comics get in touch to say that it's not them…

In Weird Worlds, Tanga was a cosmic being who travelled the universe looking for "simple creature comforts" but rarely finding them and making friends along the way like Korghan, Bent and Za and as protector of the planet Cammera, she dealt with all manner of monster attacks.

Hence the new title of the Image Comics collection, Tanga Vs The Giants.
