A Modern Take On Superhero DNA In BOOM! Studios' Black Market TP

What happens when you mix the visceral noir/pulp sensibilities of Frank J. Barbiere's Five Ghosts with Victor Santos' Filthy Rich? You get a truly modern take on superhero mythos with their series Black Market. From BOOM! Studios, written by Frank J. Barbiere, with art by Victor Santos, Black Market follows the story of Ray Willis, a broken man, and a disgraced medical examiner who makes ends meet by preparing corpses at a funeral parlor. All the while his scientific genius is being wasted. However, all of that changes when his estranged criminal brother Denny shows up on his doorstep, supposedly cleaned-up and proposing a once-in-a-lifetime partnership to cure not just cancer, but all disease. The catch? It exists within the DNA of superheroes.

That's one pretty significant catch. I can only imagine the chaos that will take place in this book. None the less, it sounds like it will be an entertaining read. If you're a fan of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' work on Sleeper this series will be a good pick for you. I took some time to gaze at the artwork, because I tend to be less motivated to read books that don't impress me style wise. I'm happy to say that Santos' art looks pretty cool. It has an edgier style to it, which I like. The Black Market TP collects all four issues of the critically acclaimed miniseries, and will arrive in comic shops this August.
