The Harvey Awards is one of the most prestigious events within the comic book industry and, on the heels of its 30th anniversary, it appears the ceremony will be taking-up new residence in iconic cartoonist Harvey Kurtzman's hometown.
ReedPOP announced today that New York Comic Con (NYCC) will now stand as the new home for the awards, beginning with a reception in 2017 and then returning with the full ceremony at NYCC 2018.
For Lance Fensterman, Global Head of ReedPOP, the addition of The Harvey Awards was a natural fit with one of the biggest pop culture conventions in the country: "We are thrilled to host such an iconic award show during one of the biggest comic events of the year, New York Comic Con. We are even more excited to honor the life and work of the late great Harvey Kurtzman here in his hometown while celebrating the industry's best work."
The Harvey Awards were created in honor of writer-artist Kurtzman and as a way for professionals within the comics industry to recognize their peers and their work in a number of categories, including: Best Cover Artist; Best New Talent; and Best Colorist. Though The Harvey Awards are changing venues for the first time in about ten years, this isn't the first time the ceremony changed locales with previous locations including: Chicago Comicon (1988); Dallas Fantasy Fair (1989–1995); WonderCon (1997–1999); Pittsburgh Comicon (2000–2002)' MoCCA Festival (2004–2005); and Baltimore Comic-Con (2006–2016).
For Nellie Kurtzman, daughter of Harvey Kurtzman, there was something personally fulfilling about bringing the ceremony back to where her father grew-up:
"My mother, my family, and I are excited and very honored to have the Harvey Awards associated with New York Comic Con. NYCC has grown exponentially over the past decade, and ReedPOP brings with them a team that is experienced in running successful events. With my father being a lifelong New Yorker, it is only fitting that the awards return to the city where he worked, and the comic book industry was born. In 2018, we all look forward to the reboot of the awards and having the Harveys in the setting of the largest comic book convention in North America."
New York Comic Con 2017 will be taking place between October 5-8 at NYC's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and will feature a line-up of guest attendees, including Kevin Conroy, Lena Headey, Mark Hamill, Jim Cummings, Michael Rooker, Nolan North, Sean Gunn, Rob Paulsen, Pablo Schreiber, Ricky Whittle, Tara Strong, Theo Rossi, Tress MacNeille, Troy Baker, Vic Mignogna, William Shatner, Yetide Badaki, and many more.
