Nineties Bad Girl Comic Rebooted As Revenge Fantasy Against Misogynist Trolls And Haters
Lookers was a sexy espionage (sexpionage?) comic book about two sisters, Michelle and Tanya Nichols, who ran Complete Recovery, Inc, a private investigation agency that specialized "in retrieving the lost, the stolen, and the missing". One was dedicated to the cause, the other was rather flippant.
Created and written by Avatar publishers William Christensen and Mark Seifert it was originally published in 1997. The comic returned for a number of oneshots and was included in the Avatar Press anthology series, Threshold, alongside Warren Ellis and Jacen Burrows' Dark Blue.
That was Avatar Press in a different time, a bad girl comics publisher that had spun off from people who worked at Wizard Magazine, years before it would reinvent itself as a modern day boutique horror publisher for some of the biggest writers in the comics industry.
But Boundless, sister publisher to Avatar, is something else. And has been reviving a number of previous series from the nineties, rebooting and reinventing them, more tongue in cheek than the originals, and using respected writers to do so. Then using Kickstarter as a way to target pre-orders directly to the readers to launch the new series, bypassing distributors and retailers.
And Lookers is the latest, to be rebooted by GI Joe/Transformers/God Is Dead's Mike Costa with artists Renato Camilo and Ron Adrian. And the ladies in question have been reinvented, one as an IT consultant, the other as a webcam girl… and their new aim is to take down online trolls and misogynist haters.
That is… quite the reboot.
The LOOKERS are back with a new imagining of the bad-ass babes in the seventh full-color title from Boundless Comics, with your help! The all-new LOOKERS #0 is a whole new beginning for this twenty year-old title, modernized by Mike Costa, writer of God is Dead & Belladonna with art by fan-favorites Renato Camilo and Ron Adrian! Sisters Michelle and Tanya take down Internet trolls and help women who are violated in the cyber world. Tanya is a webcam girl with no inhibitions and Michelle is an IT consultant with a bit of a violence addiction. Together they promise a high-octane thrill-ride as they get in way over their heads – but look great doing it! This sexy launch is, at a minimum, a 32 page comic in full- color, intended for Mature Readers over the age of 18. It's chock-full of smoking hot bad-girl art, nudity, language, adult themes, and all the tasty good stuff for grown-ups!
Okay, well, it's also an attempt at having one's cake, eating it and then licking your lips slowly on a very specialist website.
At least, you know, they're trying. If you are going to publish a shameless bad girl comic book in the 21st century, at least you can encourage a little self examination in the people who enjoy such comics. And if you are going to want to get a certain demographic to stop their hating ways, why not appeal to them through the comics you know they probably like the most?
This piece of equivocation was brought to you by Bleeding Cool, owned by Avatar Press. But then you knew that… and the Kickstarter, with a low $5700 goal, and acres of stretch targets is right here.
