Paper Crafting Is Harder Than It Looks At SDCC

Marilyn Weiss writes,

So for my last panel at San Diego Comic Con I wanted to try something a little bit different. While going over the panel list I saw "Paper Toys" and I knew I had to give it a go. I've done paper crafting in the past. I fold lots of Minecraft papercrafts every month for my local Minecraft club, and I'm pretty darn proud of a Sailor Moon origami piece that I made as art for my office. So on Sunday afternoon I set out to make a paper craft ninja turtle. Donatello to be a little more specific.

At the Paper Toys panel Studio Fun Books provided attendees with paper crafts from their current collection. Guests received an envelope filled with pieces to create a Ninja Turtle, Avenger or Star Wars mask. Studio Fun books was happy to announce their upcoming titles. The Star Wars Masks book will be available for purchase stating on July 26, and the impressive Star Wars Ships book will be available on August 23.

So with my Donatello pieces in hand, I set out to make the best damn Ninja Turtle that I could in an hour.

I started out by making forming the head, which was incredibly easy. Then I moved onto making the legs. I punched out all of the pieces, and they legs themselves turned out to be pretty easy. That was, until I got to his knee pads. While struggling to stuff tabs into holes I realized that it might in fact be easier to put actual knee pads on an actual turtle.

Undeterred I carried on. After making both legs I felt pretty accomplished. So I moved on to his arms, which were a little tougher because the tabs were smaller. Never the less, I completed my task, and started making his shell, only to be told that I had five minutes left. Whoops! So I gathered up all of his pieces and put him in my bag, praying that he wouldn't get smashed on my walk back to my room. I was going to finish this turtle if it was the last thing I do!

When I got back I laid out all of the (thankfully un-smashed) pieces and set to constructing my paper Frankenturtle. I hastily threw him together and took a picture, only to realize after that I had given him two left hands. I supposed they aren't called the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for nothing.

I can honestly say that the paper crafts was a lot of fun. The panel was mostly full of parents looking for a good way to spend some time with their kids, and to any parents out there I would highly recommend checking it out next year. In the previous years they have held the panel and make Dragons and the Avengers, and I'm sure whatever they offer next year will be just as fun.
